David Frum's Diary on National Review Online: "Meanwhile, I spent yesterday afternoon fielding calls from Canadians and especially Canadian journalists by no means friendly to the president who just could not stop enthusing about the wit, charm, warmth, and understanding of the president's speech. "

OpinionJournal - Peggy Noonan: "My first thought: It is a hard world. We all know this in the abstract, but it can take you aback in the particular. In public life the entire body of your work--an entire career of almost 50 years--can now essentially be summed up and dismissed by the last headline on your career, which in this case is 'Rather Retires Under Cloud After Forged Documents Story.' If Dan had retired of his own volition a year ago, that would not be the headline. 'Long Career Reflected Stunning Rise of U.S. Media' would be more like it. "

Dan Rather and the Eastern Establishment never forgave Richard Nixon for putting Alger Hiss in jail lying about his espionage activities on behalf of the Soviet Union. Revenge came at Watergate, when Nixon, without the cleverness and practiced deceit of a Bill Clinton, gave weapons into the hands of his enemies who left the blood roiling in the water.
People are just now beginning to appreciate the greatness of Richard Nixon and his contribution to solid anti-communism. Without Nixon, Reagon would have been impossible.
So this is the irony. I am older than Peggy Noonan, and I have not worked for Dan Rather, so I may not be able to write with the same sympathy that she does about the ambition, the desire to fit in to the Eastern set, or love for America.
I remember Rather as a mean and ambitious man, who would sacrifice the truth to build his reputation. How many times over those years of Watergate did we anti-communists wonder how much was manufactured, how much was embellished, how much was omitted, how much was stage managed to achieve a particular political agenda,
Now that Rather has been exposed as a cheap charletan it might be well to ask the question:
Considering the known liars: Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon, Dan Rather. Which two lied to protect themselves, and which one lied to destroy others?
